Outdoor Swimming at Hale

Outdoor Swimming Lessons

Swimming at Hale is different. Our friendly instructors stand ready to greet you on sandy beaches at the water’s edge. Our picturesque ponds are tinted by natural tannins, not bleached by chemicals. Our attentive lifeguards keep a watchful eye on every waterfront.

Group Lessons cater to children. Ages 3+ can move through six levels of American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim classes in which they build confidence, increase stamina, and refine strokes. Our highly trained instructors—certified by the Red Cross—foster fun, friendship, and learning.

Private Lessons are available to all ages (starting at 6 months) through our Family & Community Program. Personal instruction ensures lessons are tailored to each swimmer’s age, ability, and learning style. Adults are welcome to take private lessons as well—it’s never too late to learn to swim.

Lap Swim is on offer, too. Available for ages 18+, this lane-free option is popular with everyone from folks training for triathlons to local seniors.

My three boys love participating in the weekday swimming lessons and activities, playing at the beach, and boating. I also especially love the quieter evenings at the beach and lap swimming. The beach and grounds are beautiful and the staff are incredible—we all adore the lifeguards, counselors, and volunteers.Laura Garabedian

Group Swimming Lessons

We deliver group lessons on weekdays and weeknights. No matter what format or schedule you select, swimmers can expect to make progress over the course of one or more seasons.

Toddler Swim Class

Tadpoles

Ages 2–4 approach the pond through games, songs, and waterfront activities. Small groups of 6 work with masked instructors who provide hands-on assistance while parents and siblings relax on the beach.

Child Swimming Lessons

Levels 1 and 2

Levels 1 and 2 are an ideal place to begin for ages 3 and up. Lessons in shallow water help them acclimate to water and get comfortable with flotation through a variety of aquatic activities.

Elementary Swim Class

Levels 3 and 4

Frequented by young elementary-school-age children, Levels 3 and 4 feature more direct instruction and introduce basic analogies that facilitate reasoning (e.g. sink like a rock, float like balloon).

Advanced Youth Swimming Lessons

Levels 5 and 6

Generally tackled by older elementary-school-age children and tweens, Levels 5 and 6 include more demonstrations, drills, and practice-to-learn as a means of increasing speed and efficiency in the water.

Group Swimming Class

Group Lessons

Small groups of swimmers work with American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors while parents and siblings relax on the beach.

Weeknight Series

Schedule

You do not need to be enrolled in our Family & Community Program to take advantage of weeknight lessons! Each series includes seven classes over four consecutive weeks, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4–8 PM. All lessons are 45-minute classes. Not every level is offered at every time:

Time Levels (Ages)
4 PM Level 1 (Ages 3–4), Level 2 (Ages 3–5)
5 PM Level 1 (Ages 5+), Level 2 (Ages 6+)
6 PM Levels 3 and 4 (Ages 3+)
7 PM Levels 3 and 4 (Ages 3+)

The first class includes an evaluation to confirm your child is in the correct level. If they are not, and have to change times, we can make the change for you. If you cannot make the new time, you will be fully refunded.  Each 7-class session of weeknight lessons is $125 (members) or $140 (non-members).

Location

North Beach

Dates

  • Session 1: June 28, 30, July 7, 12, 14, 19, 21 (no class on July 5)
  • Session 2: July 26, August 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, and 18 (no class on July 28)

What about the rest of the family?
Great question! At Hale, parents are required to be on-site while their swimmers participate in lessons. But why watch from behind a glass partition or uncomfortable bleachers when you can lounge on your beach chair in the sand, while your other kids who aren’t participating in swim lessons are building sandcastles, or more. At our Family & Community Program, children and adults alike can enjoy open swim while lessons are going on, or any of the other activities we offer, while siblings learn. For weeknight group lessons at North Beach, parents can relax with a good book while siblings build sand castles. Children in lessons can warm up before their lesson if time allows.
